Introduction:

Mr and Mrs Youngs, homeowners in Peterborough, sought to maximise their home's energy efficiency while minimising their impact on the environment. The property included an aga amongst other high-usage appliances which resulted in extremely high electricity bills. With already high energy bills, they wanted to free themselves from the continually increasing costs of electricity.

In pursuit of these goals, they invested in a solar PV system that included 15 all-black solar panels, an 8kW Sunsynk hybrid inverter, and two 5.12 kWh Sunsynk batteries.

While most of the home had a thatched roof, a newer section of the property featured a flat roof, suitable for 15 solar panels.

System Design and Selection:

  • Solar Panels: The 15 all-black solar panels were chosen for their high efficiency and aesthetic appeal, contributing to the visual appeal of the property.

  • Inverter and Batteries: An 8kW Sunsynk hybrid inverter was selected to efficiently manage the solar energy conversion process. Two 5.12 kWh Sunsynk batteries were integrated into the system to store excess energy for use during periods of low solar production or power outages.

  • Bird Protection: Bird protection was incorporated to safeguard the solar panels from potential bird nesting, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of the system.

  • Mounting System: The Van der Valk flat roof mounting system was chosen for its durability and versatility in flat roof applications, providing a secure and efficient platform for the solar panels.

Installation Process:

Our experience team of MCS-certified electricians completed the installation process, taking into account the unique characteristics of a flat roof and incorporating bird protection measures. The installation process included the following key steps:

  1. Roof Assessment: The installers conducted a thorough assessment of the flat roof to determine the optimal placement of the 15 solar panels. The Van der Valk mounting system was selected to ensure stability and effective positioning.

  2. Solar Panel Installation: The 15 all-black solar panels were securely mounted on the flat roof using the Van der Valk mounting system. The panels were positioned to capture maximum sunlight throughout the day.

  3. Inverter and Battery Setup: The 8kW Sunsynk hybrid inverter and the two 5.12 kWh Sunsynk batteries were installed in the properties garage. The inverter was configured to efficiently manage the energy flow between the solar panels and batteries.

  4. Bird Protection Installation: Bird protection was carefully installed around all the solar panels, creating a barrier to prevent birds from nesting or causing damage.

  5. Testing and Commissioning: Rigorous testing was conducted to ensure proper functionality of the entire system. The Youngs were provided with comprehensive training on monitoring and managing their solar PV system.

Benefits and Results:

The solar PV system installation has provided several benefits to Mr and Mrs Young:

  1. Optimized Energy Production: The flat roof mounting system allowed for optimal positioning of the 15 solar panels, maximising energy production throughout the day.

  2. Enhanced Bird Protection: The bird protection has effectively deterred birds from nesting or causing potential damage to the solar panels, preserving the system's efficiency.

  3. Increased Energy Independence: The combination of 15 solar panels and dual 5.12 kWh batteries provided the Youngs with increased energy independence, reducing their reliance on the traditional grid.

  4. Financial Savings: The solar PV system has led to a significant reduction in the Youngs' monthly electricity bills, resulting in long-term financial savings.

  5. Reduced Carbon Footprint: The reduced reliance on traditional grid power has also reduced their household carbon footprint.
